Beginner Basket Classes with Mrs. Jimmie Kent

3rd Tuesday, April through October 2017 from 10AM to 2PM

Cost for each basket is $35.00, and includes all the supplies and tools you will need for each class.  Bring a snack/lunch as we will work through lunch. Age level is 18 or up. Beginner Classes are limited to 8 students & will be taught in the Basket Gallery.

Experienced Basket Classes with Mrs. Jimmie Kent

2nd Tuesday, April through October 2017 from 9:30AM to 3PM

Cost for each basket is $55.00, and includes all the supplies and tools you will need for each basket.  You are welcome to bring a snack/lunch as we will work through lunch. Age level is 18 or up. Experienced Basket Classes are limited to 15 students & will be taught in the Cultural Arts Center (downstairs of the Barn).

Pine Needle Basket Classes with Melanie Walter

2nd Tuesday, July, August, September 2017 from 9:30AM to 3PM

Cost for each basket is $55.00, and includes all the supplies and tools you will need for each basket. You are welcome to bring a snack/lunch as we will work through lunch.  Age level is 18 or up. Suitable for those persons with no previous experience. Pine Needle Basket Classes are limited to 15 students & will be taught in the Cultural Arts Center (downstairs of the Barn).

Registration & payment are due at least one week before class.  Registration closes one week before class. No refunds, as materials are purchased prior to class. Unfortunately, there are not make-up classes.

This basket is woven with a stop & start weave, each row woven separate. Techniques that will be taught are simple twine and S&S weaving.  Several colors for you to pick for your trim. Diagonal bottom fillers after basket is finished.

This basket starts with a wood bottom with stakes inserted in the Nantucket Style.  Woven with smoked & natural reed. Placement of dyed brown smoked reed forms the design.  We will insert a hand-carved oak handle.

Finished Size:  Round, 33″, 10″ diameter – 6″ tall without handle & 11″ with handle.

Techniques weaving double bottom using Indian Lifeline weave.  Sides weaving S&S weave plus using different widths of reed for a sturdy basket.  Single lash & topped off with a hand carved oak handle.

Basic Pine Needle Basket

In this session, students will learn how to make a pine needle basket, focusing on how to start, coil, and shape the wall of the piece. Students should expect to have two completed pieces by the end of the class.

In addition to learning how to make the basket, students will learn how to locate long leaf pine needles, prepare them for use, and will learn how to seal the finished basket.

All supplies needed for this project will be provided.

Participants will need to be able to see well enough to thread a needle and distinguish individual stitches. This is a basic class, suitable for those persons with no previous experience.

In this session, students will learn how to make pine needle and cork trivets and coasters. Black walnut slices will be added to the outside of the created pieces for embellishment. Additional supplies will be available if students wish to create more coasters or trivets on their own at home.

Using a divided form, stakes will be inserted in the Nantucket style; S&S weaving method. Forming your design using some dyed & natural weave.  A basket with many uses such as ‘remote control’ round up, even peanuts on one side & your hulls in the other!

Students will create several pine needle and wooden disc ornaments. Wooden discs with various holiday designs will be provided, and students will learn how to add coils of prepared pine needles to finish the ornaments.  A minimum of 6 ornaments will be completed during this session. Additional supplies will be available if students wish to create more ornaments on their own at home.

Stop & start weaving, using a “D” handle. A very sturdy market basket, woven with natural reed & a ribbon of dyed reed pleasing to the eye.

Weaving over a glass vase that will remain with the basket.  A wood base & solid rim will complete the basket. Continuing weave using spiral design.  Stakes are dark green & weaving with a natural cane.  A beautiful piece that you will be proud  to say, yes, we actually did this in class!

Bring your own chair or stool to class – the seat being no larger than 15″ X 12.” We will furnish 3/8 flat material, plus tools for you to use in class. This is an opportunity to bring in that antique stool or chair in which you have already refurbished the wood but requires a woven bottom.

This basket starts out with a twill bottom & a slight cat-head design. Continuing weave with a slip in hand-carved oak handle that will shape the basket.  Show off those seashells that you are gathering!

This basket was designed approximately 20 years ago for our porch to hold the corn that we fed to the wild turkeys.  We will start out with a 13″ wood base. Stakes will be inserted in the groove & a continuous twill weave to a height pleasing to the eye. Finished off with leather handles.

Our Buffet Basket was designed by Barbara Gilbert.  She and her husband created a lot of forms to organize things in the home.  They have both since passed. This one is designed for your napkins/silverware and perfect for your counter. Staves will be inserted in the groove of the form & we will do a continuous weave of all natural reed.

This basket will start out with a large oval wood bottom & will be our 2005 version, though several designs will be shown.  Overlays with space dyed reed, plus a few rows (7) in the middle. Topped off with leather handles.
